While out on a training drive with some of the new student rangers we came across an amazing sighting. We were focusing on birds for the day so calls and sightings were going well when we heard the characteristic chirps of bee-eaters. While we were approaching the sight I was explaining that we only get the European Bee-eater down here and it had been a long time since they visited. We arrived at the tree they were sitting in and took a closer look. Well I had to eat my words these were not European but the beautiful rare Blue Cheeked Bee-eaters. WOW WOW WOW. Now this just blew my mind as I know they don’t occur here and only far in the northern parts of South Africa. This is why I have a passion for the bush, there is always something new and mother nature loves to prove everyone wrong.
