All APU members have a deep love of conservation and come from a variety of backgrounds, including the police and the military.
The Sibuya APU is tasked with the protection of endangered species – principally the Rhino – and includes the general security and emergency response on the Reserve.
Members are trained in First Aid, use of off-road vehicles as well as a variety of firearms in order to effectively and safely conduct patrols around dangerous game and for protection, in the eventuality that poachers gain access to the Reserve.

Included in their duties are assisting with ecological research, mentoring and monitoring students with endangered game and providing photographs and reports to relevant personnel.
The APU is the home of our invaluable team of ‘Canine Companions’, our K-9 Unit, who are highly intelligent Belgian Malinois – a real handful ! We train, nurture, maintain and operate this team to successfully enable the APU’s ability to track and apprehend poachers within Sibuya Game Reserve.
Being a member of the Anti-Poaching & K-9 Team requires a special form of dedication, discipline and commitment – for that alone – the APU are of tremendous value and importance to the security of the Reserve in general.
We salute and thank every one of our APU & K-9 Units from the bottom of our hearts – our heroes!
